Sleeping Enough?

Questions to Ask Yourself…

  • Do you have problems staying awake doing routine tasks?
  • Have you almost fallen asleep while driving?
  • Do you nap more than once a day?
  • Do you feel tired when you wake up?
  • Does it take you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep?
  • Do you have “creeping, crawling feelings” in the legs when falling asleep?
  • Do you or your bed partner complain of loud snoring, gasping, choking, or do you ever stop breathing?
Note: If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you may have problems with sleep.

Tips to a good night’s (or days) sleep…

  • Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate) & nicotine.
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Exercise
  • Avoid heavy meals close to bedtime.
  • Soak in hot water before bedtime.
  • Establish regular bedtime & wake schedule.
  • Make your bed comfortable.
  • Use your bed only for sleep & intimate behavior.
  • Avoid reading books, watching TV or stimulating activities 1 hour prior to bedtime.
  • Use relaxation techniques (breathing, exercises, and meditation).
  • Keep the room quiet.

Tips for a good day’s sleep while working NIGHTS…

  • Eat largest meal when you wake up.
  • Eat healthy foods, avoid junk food.
  • Avoid fatty foods toward the end of the shift. A fat, heavy meal takes 8 hours to digest.
  • Have caffeinated beverages before or early in your shift.
