Do you enjoy Southern Style fare? These fried foods, processed and salty meats and sweetened drinks tend to combine 3 factors known to raise the risk of cardiovascular disease: Saturated fat increases unhealthy cholesterol and obesity risk, salty foods increase blood pressure risk and sugary drinks boost the risk of obesity and diabetes. Keep these foods to a minimum.
When eating together is emphasized, it is not just beneficial at home, it’s beneficial at the station too: It fosters communication, healthier meals and consuming more appropriate portions compared to eating in front of the television.
Herbal supplements can provide health benefits, but beware because they can interact with medications. Coenzyme Q-10, Echinacea, Ginko Biloba, Ginseng, Saw Palmetto and St John’s Wort can change how the body breaks down some medication. Always tell your PCP or pharmacist about any supplements you’re taking to avoid drug/herb interactions.
Enjoy the benefits of adding Greek yogurt to your diet, but opt to choose low fat and plain options. Adding a touch of honey or fresh fruit to sweeten it yourself could drastically cut your sugar intake.
